It is said that the present town of Kollam was built by the Syrian Merchant; Sapir Iso, in the 9th Century A.D. The popularity of Kollam has been established by the time honoured proverb once you see Kollam, you will not need home any more. Kollam is an important commercial, industrial and trading centre.

Mayyanad (10 Km from Kollam Town)
Mayyanad is noted for its shrines and temples. The most important of the nine temples here is the Subramanya Temple at Umayanallor. The shrine is said to have been consecrated by the great Hindu philosopher Sree Sankaracharya.
Shasthamkotta (29 Km from Kollam Town)
This vast fresh water lake surrounded by hills on three sides is the largest of its kind in Kerala. The ancient Sastha Temple which lends its name to the town, is an important pilgrim centre.
Thenmala Eco Tourism
Thenmala is home to India's first planned eco-tourism project. It has equal opportunities for fun, adventure, leisure and for learning the significance and necessity of eco-friendly measures for promoting tourism related activities. The sway bridge here could be an exciting proposition, especially for children. Adding more variety and elegance to the landscape here is the Sculpture Garden, which has Man & Nature as its theme. The elevated walkway for a journey that winds through the canopy of trees and going over rocky terrains bringing one close to life at different heights. And still those who don't mind to give their body muscles a real work out can go for mountain biking, rock climbing and river crossing. The project area also has tree top huts and children's eco-park, riverside treks, and battery powered vehicle rides through the forest, enabling one to sight wildlife from a close distance
Palaruvi Waterfalls (75 Kms from Kollam Town)
Palaruvi which means "
stream of milk
" makes its way down the rocks, from a height of 300 feet. The Palaruvi woods is a beautiful picnic spot.
Jadayu Park (30 Kms from Kollam Town)
A vast rocky area and a small temple on the top of the rock is Jadayu Para. This place is located at Chadayamangalam. Jadayu para is believed to be the place where the Ravanan cut Jadayu's wings (The great Bird King, who try to stop Ravanan on his way to Lanka with Sita). A huge sculpture of a mythological bird from the Indian epic Ramayana is under construction at the top a Rock. This place is one of the most important tourist’s spots in Kerala.
Tangassery Light House( 10 Kms from Kollam Town)
The Dutch Quilon as it was called used to be a British Enclave. The place is also popular as Thangasseri. The lighthouse built at Quilon by the British in the year 1902 is visible as far as 13 miles in the sea. The lighthouse stands to an amazing height of 144 feet. The picturesque view of the sea from the place where the lighthouse stands is breathtaking. In the vicinity lies the Portuguese Fort. The fort was built in the year 1517 and at present only a wall of the fort has escaped the assaults made by Time.
Ashtamudi Backwaters
So called because of its 8 arms or channels, Ashtamudi Lake is the gateway to the backwaters. Located in Kollam District, this lake 16 km long and the second largest in Kerala, finds its way into the sea through the Neendakara estuary.
